Tory Victory via a Tory/ Liberal alliance ?

From Laura Wright
Wednesday, 5 May 2010

Yes like you Margaret, after becoming aware of the local polls, I have begun to think that the only option is for me to vote Lib Dem for the first time in history. However, it has to be said that personally I would feel a lot happier about this decision if a) I had noticed Hilary Myers voicing the same active opposition to the Garden Street Development last year that Janet Batty did b) If I felt that given a choice the Lib Dems would opt for an alliance with Labour rather than Tory c) That if they had to form an alliance with the Tories they would continue to oppose the war in Iraq, push for electoral reform and retain the idealism which is currently attracting a lot of younger voters to them (eg as in the 'student vote' in Withington in the last election).

Laura, I have much sympathy with your dilemma; those of us who have always voted Labour have been placed in an impossible place by the Labour Party's conduct. I am going to vote Lib Dem because they are the only party which can beat the Tories here and at all costs we need to avoid a Tory government with the long term damage that woul2d cause. If you look at the polls for Calder and the lack of campaigning the Labour Party is doing you can see their vote disappearing fast and as Booth is already in third place, she is out of it. From what I observe, Hilary Myers would make a good constituency MP and a victory for her would be one less Tory in Parliament and that's good enough for me. Roll on electoral reform when it would be worth voting for the Greens!!!

It is becoming increasingly difficult to vote for what you 'believe in' in this election.

I was quite shocked like a lot of others when I read the details of Steph Booth's industrial dispute - it didn't look good.

I also like Janet and thought she would have been a great candidate. However when the chips are down is it the lesser of two evils to have Steph Booth as our MP or David Cameron as our prime minster ? We are one of the marginal seats where voting will make a difference to the overall result after all.
