Editorial: If we look back at the results for the Calder Valley constituency for 1992, 1997, 2001 and 2005 (see below), we see that, although the Liberal Democrats perform well in local elections, in the general elections, the battle has been between Labour and Conservative. The Lib Dems have been far behind in each of the past three general elections. Is there any reason to think that the 2010 election will be any different?

With Labour fielding a controversial candidate who is not popular among many Labour supporters, at first sight, it looks like nothing will stop Craig Whittaker taking the seat for the Conservatives.

One other factor which is certainly going to make a difference is the public’s anger over the expenses scandals. Many have already said they won’t bother voting. Others may turn to the smaller parties who haven’t been tainted with scandal. Could this be an opportunity for the Green Party who are also likely to benefit from the votes of some of those Labour supporters who won’t be able to bring themselves to put their cross next to the name of Steph Booth?
